As testing season wraps up, teachers and students throughout the Hamilton County School District are celebrating more than scores. They are celebrating hard work, determination, and a little creativity along the way.
Because Florida’s accountability system places a major focus on student growth and achievement, teachers spend countless hours planning, reteaching, encouraging, and finding ways to keep students motivated throughout a long school year. Across Hamilton County, teachers continue to find creative ways to keep students engaged and excited during testing season. Mrs. Fouraker and Coach Murphy are two great examples of that dedication.
At HCES, Mrs. Fouraker’s fourth-grade class reached an incredible milestone with 94% proficiency. Along with strong instruction and student effort throughout the year, Mrs. Fouraker and other teachers provided students with cash giveaways out of their own pockets. Mrs. Fouraker also awarded trophies to students with the highest scores. The excitement and motivation created by these incentives paid off in a big way.
At HCHS, Coach Murphy’s civics students are currently at a 72% proficiency rate on the Civics End-of-Course Exam, which will be the highest civics score ever recorded at the school. Earlier in the year, Coach Murphy promised students that if they broke the school record, they could color his hair. This week, he proudly followed through on that promise as students celebrated the accomplishment together.
While these stories are fun, they also highlight the dedication teachers bring to the classroom every day. Teachers and students work hard all year long, and sometimes students just need that extra spark of motivation and encouragement to push themselves even further. These moments remind us that strong instruction, positive relationships, high expectations, and creative thinking outside the box can make a lasting impact on students and overall school culture.
I know we have so many other success stories to highlight, but to all our teachers, students, and staff throughout the district, thank you for your hard work, dedication, and commitment. It has truly paid off!
